Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask if working from home as a HVAC Designer is becoming more accepted in the industry?

Has anyone had a difficult time convincing companies that this is a very possible way to work?

I would really like to hear others experiences and opinions on this.

Thanks in advance...

Working "vurtual" (working from home or elsewhere) is becoming a common practice.
Do you want to work vurtual? Or start your own home business?

How can they micromanage that way?

Regards,

Mike

I've heard that companies don't like it because you lose the casual conversations that can solve problems in the office. That said I'd love to be able to design my stuff from home, but I can see how it would interfere.

It doesn't work for all companies and types of work. If you work on military/gov designs, it probably won't fly.
If working vurtual, you have to have a direct login ID and phone number to your company where it is tracked by mngmt through I.T.
Our people have to be available at any time during the work hours from the vurtual office.
The home office also has to pass ergonomics, safety and security inspections.

I don't want to work from home at all - unless it's stuff I'm doing apart from my day job.

TheTick,
How about with the PE? That's my scenario and I would love to work from home.

I do see the disadvantages of not having the quick, easy, face-to-face access to peers and others though. This ability does solve problems.

Maybe 3 days in the office, 2 days at home?

I think it would depend on the culture of the company, the trust the owners have, etc...

Over 50 people in our department, over half work from home (vurtual) and any given day.

Thanks for the input... It is good seeing the various opinions etc.

I feel it works well. For me, if I need to get advice on a design, I will either e-mail or pick up the phone.
