Hi,
I am designing a Worm drive that needs to drive a leadscrew. I have calculated a Torque req'd to drive the load to be 442in#

For packaging reasons I want to use an 8dp 20T Bronze gear and hardened Steel worm.

Is there an empirical equation for Wormgera strength I can use?

I have found in the Boston Gear catalog approx HP and Torque ratings for Bronze/Steel combinations, and am using those but would like something else in case my future application is unique. According to the Bosto Gera catalog the 8dp 20T combination apperas to be adequate.

Thanks for any help the forum can provide.

Regards Dave C

AGMA has quite a few good documents on worm gearing. ANSI/AGMA 6022, "Design Manual for Cylindrical Wormgearing" lists equations for stresses on the teeth.
