Hello Dear Engineers,
we are planning to buy some retrieval tools and access fittings. Rohrback cosasco is offering a Magnetic Retriever to have access to corrosion probes in high pressure pipelines. I wanted to ask you all if you have any experience with this tool or the overall reputation of the company.

Thanks

Have no experience with any magnetic retriever, but have a fair amount of experience with Rohrback probes.

They work as well as any other ER probe I've ever seen (not great). They've always been extremely responsive with any technical questions, but it can take a while to get replacement probes in.

Could you please explain what flaws you see in the ER probes?

Recall there are discussions in this forum, where feedback from a frequent contributor indicates that corrosion coupons are next to useless in this service, which ties up with the scarcity of these devices in more recent process drawings. The online Cosasco coupon retrieval procedure will probably rattle a few nerves in Operations management also.

Well, they only provide a (semi) accurate reading with very uniform corrosion rates. Pitting will cause funny readings. If you put shields on them to protect them from direct impingement, the shields can often plug up, causing erroneously low readings. If they're damaged during installation (not uncommon), they can cause erroneous readings that may not actually be obviously erroneous until you pull it out and mic the probe.

They're decent for general corrosivity comparisons to confirm efficacy of treatment and operational changes, but I don't generally trust the calculated corrosion rates.
