Does anyone know what the acronym "WPHY" stands for in regards to pipe fittings?

From my research it appears the the "HY" stands for high yield (strength). If that is true, then what about the "WP"?

So WPHY basically means high yield strength wrought pipe & with wrought meaning the pipe has been shaped/formed into a fitting.

means plate has been wrought into a pipe fitting.

Wought fittings can also be made from pipe, forgings or bar stock.

Thanks Stan. How can you tell which form the fitting was made from?

If the fitting has a weld seam, it was made from plate or skelp. If seamless it was made from seamless pipe, a forging or from bar stock. Bar stock is genarally used only for small bore fittings.
