Is there a variable stating that when a welder passes a qualification test he is limited to steel groups 1 and 2. I see it stated on wpqr forms but cannot find it in the D1.1. There are group 3 steels in table 3.1. I do not doubt that it is a variable I just want to know where to find it. I was under the assumption that table 4.12 contained the variables for welder qualification.

Thanks in advance!

Per AWS D1.1-2010 edition, you are correct in stating table 3.1 lists steel in groups, but this is for the WPS information to list what range of base metals the WPS is qualified for. Table 4.12 does contain the essential variables for welder qualification, and it does not list the base metal as an essential variable change like other codes such as ASME Section IX because the base metal range applicable to D1.1 is limited to the scope ranges of clause 1 in respect to thickness and material tensile strength (although an engineer may specify the use of this code for materials outside of the scope by there acceptance only)

hope this helps.
