Hi,

I need an advise on qualifying piping WPS (SA 106 Gr B) to be based on Plate (SA 516 Gr 70) PQR.

Another question is that whether the WPS for plate (SA 516 Gr 70) can be used interchangebly for a pipe to pipe (A 106 Gr B) welding as the group no of both these metals are the same. I noticed that the weld positions as for QW-405 for both plate and pipe are not totally the same.

Sorry for asking this fundemental question as I'm not a welding Engineer. Also, I've been trying to search on ASME IX on my 1st question but to be unavail.

faisman;
If you have a copy of Section IX handy, look at the following for WPS qualification;

QW-210 PREPARATION OF TEST COUPON
QW-211 Base Metal
The base metals may consist of either plate, pipe, or
other product forms. Qualification in plate also qualifies
for pipe welding and vice versa.

I would suggest you first review Article II before launching into other Articles in Section IX. Start from the General section.

The PQR performed on plate can be used for pipe and vice versa. This has been permitted since the 1974 Edition of ASME IX.

Be careful if impacts are involved. You incorrectly stated that SA516-70 and SA106B have the same group numbers. SA516-70 is Group # 2,SA106B is Group # 1.
