I am reviewing a welding procedure that was qualified using a 0.28 in. thick test plate and was welded with short-circuit GMAW for 1/8 in. and pulse GMAW for the remainder of the thickness. In the WPS, is the base metal thickness qualified restricted by QW-403.10 or is QW-451.1 required to be followed?

Since your plate T was 0.28" I would base the thickness qualified on QW403.10. It is only over 1/2" T that QW451.1 would apply, at least the way I read it.

The qualified base metal thickness shall be 1.1*0.28 = 0.308 inches for GMAW-S (see QW-403.10)
You may also write on the WPS, two base metal thickness tanges, one for GMAW-S and second for GMAW-P. For GMAW-P, use Table QW-451.1.
Similarrly treat with weld metal deposited qualified thickness range for GMAW-S that is 1.1*1/8 = 0.1375 inches (see QW-404.32), and for GMAW-P see Table QW-451.1

Qualified base metal thickness = .4475"
Qualified thickness for GMAW-S = .1375"
Qualified thickness for GMAW-P = .310"

One maximum base metal thickness is all that is required.

hello jimmy123,
you cannot increase the production base metal thickness beyond 1.1 times the test coupon thickness when PQR test coupon thickness less than or equat to half of an inch is welded by GMAW-S, then how the qualified base metal thickness is 0.4475" ?

Nasir,
I agree with you regarding the thickness qualified but not sure I agree with having two ranges on one WPS.
0.28" = 7.11 mm
1/8" = 3.1 mm (GMAW-S) so remainder (GMAW-P) is 4.0 mm

2 x t for the GMAW-P on it's own = 8.0 mm
2 x t for GMAW-S/GMAW-P in combination = 7.82 mm

IMHO, Not much to be gained other than significant confusion if two ranges are listed on one WPS.

Just out of interest, is the GMAW-S considered as "backing" for the GMAW-P ?

Cheers,
DD
