I am currently reviewing a P15E ASME Sec IX Weld Procedure. Need to know if you can weld out a 38mm thick SA-387-Gr-91-Cl-2 PQR test coupon using GTAW for the first 10 mm & then complete the test using GMAW. Then record only the 10mm GTAW Process on the WPS with GTAW only. Seems a little strange to me. Look forward to the great responses.

Question(s) and Reply(ies): Question: A combination weld process PQR was qualified using the GTAW for the root pass, SMAW, and SAW. May this PQR support a WPS for welding with only one or two of the processes shown on the PQR?
Reply: Yes, provided the following are met: (a) The remaining essential, nonessential, and supplementary essential variables, when applicable, are applied. (b) The base metal and deposited weld metal thickness limits of QW-451 are applied.
 
A WPS can be qualified using more than one welding process on the test coupon and recorded on the PQR. The deposited thickness for each process must be recorded because the usable thickness range of each process is based on the thickness recorded on the PQR.

Once qualified, the WPS can be divided into several WPSs provided the essential variables and if needed, supplemental essential variables are not changed.

A WPS using GTAW for the root and second layer and FCAW for the remaining layers can be qualified using a single test assemble. All the appropriate data must be recorded on the PQR. The WPS can then be sub divided into two WPSs for production. The WPS for GTAW may be used for thinner materials. The FCAW can be used for thicker materials.

The answer is yes as provide above. I assume that you are reviewing a WPS from a contractor or fabricator as the owner or owner's engineer or a third party reviewer.
 


The recorded thickness of 10 mm ON PQR coupon qualifies 20mm max deposition by GTAW. Hence there's nothing wrong on the part of he contractor to specific 10 mm of GTAW deposit & rest by GMAW.
Legally the PQR qualifies: GTAW Weld Deposit of 20mm MAX , GMAW Weld deposit up to 200 mm and the combined PQR qualifies welding(WPS) up to 200 mm thickness of BM.
