Wrong Stamping

I had the stamping done on a header with low stress stamps and the year built is wrong. Should have been 2009 not 2010. Is it ok to sand off the 10 and replace it with 09? I cannot find anything on removal of stamping under ASME section 1.

I think you would normally stamp through the 2010 and beside it stamp 2009 but am not sure on proper protocol

I suggest you ask your Authorized Inspector for the proper procedure.
 
If you grind anything on that stamp, anybody may come around grinding anything they want, blaming it on you. Even if not altered after grinding, the credibility of the stamp will descend below the frog's...eye level.
At your AI discretion, you may cross out the whole stamp and restamp it fresh or cross the incorrect year and restamp the correct year. I don't believe the later would be acceptable modification, though (not controlled).
