XREF-XCLIP-MECHANICAL DESKTOP?

I am setting up our site and equipment drawings in Autocad Mechanical Desktop (managed by Meridian but that should not be a factor).

Equipment dwawings are things like barges and floating drydocks, whose plan views must be xref'd into the site plans where the river soundings are shown. The trouble is that the equipment drawings show plan, elevation and sections of the equipment in model space. I don't want everthing in model space to show up on the site plan. Is there a way to xref just the plan view of the equipment into the site drawings without have to creat a drawing that has only the plan view?

I found the answer to this in another post. Now if somebody could tell me how to keep the dimensions (all on one layer) from showing up in the drawing using the xref?

Make sure VISRETAIN is set to 1 and FREEZE the layer where the dimensions are drawn on.
