I'm working on a hospital project where the facility person is insisting on yellow plates on all the emergency outlets. Does anyone have a source for these? I'd hate to just have my electrician spray paint some metal plates.

Yellow!? I thought red was typical in hospitals for emergency??

Hiya Woodrow,

I used to be a hospital engineer, I'd attack it in this order:

1) Ask if he's sure that yellow on an emergency circuit will pass the JCAHO's rules and regs, because every other hospital in the hemisphere uses red.

2) If he still says yellow, get enough steel ones for the job and take 'em to your favorite auto body shop for paint. They can do it all in one swoop and make it look nicer than typical electricians using rattle cans (no offense).

I know of no manufacturer who'll turn out a yellow plate.

Let us know how you make out!

IEEE 602 recommends against marking the plates, since they may be mixed up when walls are repainted.

We have been using red RECEPTACLES and standard (white or putty) plates for emergency, to avoid the removal issue.

Another nicety to add is to mark the originating panelboard and circuit number on the phase conductor inside the box. Came in handy a number of times...

Good on ya,

Old Dave
