We are about to start building a frame work from mild steel.
We have done many of these frames in the past but in this particular case we are using two different sizes for the main member sections.
We will be using a 70x70 box section for one and 50x50 for the other
Usually we use 50x50x3mm box for both pieces
It is important that we try to maintain as much equality in strength across the two members
Obviously the 70x70x3 piece will naturally be stronger than the 50x50x3 piece so what I want to know is.
Is there a thickness we can go up to on the 50x50 piece to increase its strength to bring it closer to the 70x70x3 piece, for example 50x50x4?
Or using 70x70x3mm mild steel and 50x50x3mm in S355, would this balance them out somewhat?
I appreciate there are lots of factors to consider in the strength though construction but I just want to try and balance out the yield on both of them as much i can
Thanks

Much more info is needed. Good Drawings and better pictures in your very next post will save many needless back and forth posts.

The loading and the joining of the members will make a big difference.
Bending, pure vertical loading, etc and etc.

These are terrible gussets if the loading is more than trivial.

Decent welding can not save a deficient design.
