Dears,

What is relationship between weld material and base material yield strength, what factors are considered to weld the load carrying structures, i.e. selecting the weld rods yield strength as compared to the components yield strength, going to be welded together.

Any pointing towards the technical literature/book discussing the subject, will be helpful. Thanks for the help.

Depending on the electrode, you can undermatch, overmatch, or match the weld strength to the base material. We typically use E70 electrodes which have a yield strength of 70 ksi. For wide flanges we typically use 50 ksi steel. So when you weld a wide flange given the parameters above, you are overmatching (70 ksi weld vs. 50 ksi steel).

If you specify a full pen (CJP) weld, you don't "design" the weld because it is stronger than the pieces you are welding. So if your member works, so will the weld.

Hope that helps

E7018 have a min. tensile strength of 70,000....not yield. Yield min is 58,000.

Class Min. Tensile Strength Min. Yield Strength
E60xx 62,000 psi 50,000 psi
E70xx 70,000 psi 57,000 psi
E80xx 80,000 psi 67,000 psi
E90xx 90,000 psi 77,000 psi
E100xx 100,000 psi 87,000 psi
E110xx 110,000 psi 95,000 psi
E120xx 120,000 psi 107,000 psi

Thanks for the correction guys, my fingers type faster than my brain thinks.
