Hi All,

I have recently come across a company called Proton Technologies Canada, which claims they can produce hydrogen from depleted oil and gas wells, while keeping the produced CO2 underground.

Company link:
The company wants to inject pure oxygen and heat the reservoir (similar to fire flooding). Through gasification reactions CO would then react with H2O to produce H2 and CO2. Hydrogen would then exit the reservoir through a membrane in bore whole, leading to only hydrogen surfacing at the reservoir exit and CO2 remaining in the reservoir.

More details on the process can be found here:
I am not an reservoir engineering expert, but I think the technology would have great potential for decarbonizing our industry in the most cost-effective way.

I was wondering if there are any true reservoir engineering experts in this forum who could share their views on this technology, potential barriers to implementation and feasibility of the overall solution?

Any input would be much appreciated here.

Best wishes,

M
