I gotten myself really confused on how to correct for oversized fraction using ASTM D4718 and D698. Methods D698 call for test to be run on material passing 3/4 or 3/8 or #4 sieve and to correct if 5% of coarse fraction is not used in test. Since you are only using material passing the specific sieve, doesn't this require you to correct for oversized fraction most of the time.
If so, based on the procedure for 4718, is the entire field sample used to run test for 698. Add water to entire sample and mix throughly, run material through sieve, part passing is used in compaction test, determine mass and moisture contenct of coarse and fine portions to determine percentages. Put all samples back into testt container, add more water and so on. Is this correct?
