802.11b on Prism 3 802.11g hardware

We have an application using 802.11b on a radio with a Prism 3 chipset. If I plug in an 802.11g radio will I still be able to communicate over 802.11b without firmware changes? Is the 802.11g register set a superset of the 802.11b register set?
