So at the bottom of the table it says that:

"... and a dowel bearing strength (Fe) of 87,000 psi for ASTM A 36 steel."

I thought A 36 is 36 ksi? Why 87 ksi? I am trying to make a spread sheet that will give me these table values and I cant seem to justify the 87 ksi.

Look in AISC 360-05 page 16.1-111. The nominal bearing stress when deformation of the hole at service loads is not a design consideration is 1.5Fu. Fu for A36 if 58,000psi. 1.5*58,000=87,000psi. It is equation J3-6b in The thirteenth edition manual.

Thanks man! I can tell you were on hell of a student when you were in school. Did you sit on front row? :)

No Problem - I actually sat at the back of the class and paid very close attention. I was hesitant to sit at the front of the class for fear of being thought of as a suck-up by the slackers. I wouldn't want them all to think I didn't earn the 100's I got on my tests.
