Hi everyone,

I'm totally new to storage tank design and wondering if someone can help explain to me or show me a sample figure that I can look up to help me understand the following terms:

- Shell Plate
- Roof Plate
- Knuckle Plate
- Floating Roof

Thanks in advance

Recommended for you

Shell plate: the round segments of the "can". Often 8 or 10 ftte high and 30 to 40 feet long, rolled to the correct diameter and stacked to form a culindrical shell.

Roof plate: most tank roofs are too large to be made from a single plate of steel, the pieces are called roof plates and are often 8 feet wide by 20 feet long. They are often supported by rafters and are overlapped and welded to cover the tank.

Knuckle plate: a plate that is curved in two directions and forms a rounded intersection between the tank shell and the tank roof, or the tank shell and the tank bottom, or at another location where there is a change in shape or direction of the tank.

Floating roof: a raft that floats on the liquid surface. Most often made from steel or aluminum. Used to reduce the evporation and/or keep rain or other contamination from getting in the liquid.

Suggest you get a book on Aboveground Storage Tanks (AST). Phly Meyers wrote one, probably on Google or Amazon.
