our catalytic reforming unit is made up of 4 furnaces and 4 reactors(IFP). The temperature difference across the 3rd reactor was designed to be between 40 and 50 degrees. But for more than 6 months now the temperature difference is between 15 to 25 degrees. The pressure is ok. This is the only reactor given a temperature difference out of its designed specification. Can somebody surgest to me what might be the possible cause of this temperature gradient.

padovano, just for our understanding, is this a unit that is only 6 months old or has the delta T changed vs 6 months ago (which would be strange)?

The best answer should be provided by IFP themselves.

Anyway, as I figure it, the general multireactor CCR approach includes the following reactions:

[•] In the first reactor the prime reaction is naphthene dehydrogenation (endothermic: ~51-53 kcal/g mole)

[•] In the second reactor, further dehydrogenation and some paraffin dehydrocyclization (endothermic: ~11-17 kcal/g mole) take place with a further drop in temperature

[•] In the third and fourth reactors, slower paraffin isomerization (exothermic:~2.3 kcal/g mol) and paraffin hydrocracking (exothermic:~13.5 kcal/g mole) start to predominate.

Thus, temperature drops in each reactor would normally be affected by a balance among the various reactions, which themselves can be affected by the type of feedstock.

the delta T changed just six months ago.
