Does anyone know how to determine what is an acceptable level of piping vibration. We have a severe issue at certain loads with one of our main steam leads to a turbine, and are installing dampers in an attempt to solve. How do I know what is an 'acceptable' improvement?

seanmc,

There seems to be no straightforward answer to this question....I have many years of power piping design experience...... and there is no "quick chart" that can be consulted about acceptable levels of vibration.

The best source of guidance is the ASME B31.1 Power piping code, and the text only states a general caution against "excessive" vibration.

I suggest that you post tis question under the eng-tips "Piping & Fluid mechanics Forum"..... also post at
Good luck !!!
