Hello everyone,
I am looking for a reasonably priced controller for a 1HP single phase squirrel cage fan motor.
What I am trying to acheive is a quite start-up of a 3 ton fan coil. Something to ramp the load up slowly to prevent the squeeel...
Is there any such animal out there? Thanks much! Jon

You more than likely have a capacitor start motor. Something with a little less starting torque like a permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor may stop the belts slipping.

Provided that the motor is a capacitor start motor, it is possible to apply a single phase soft starter to the run winding and achieve a useful soft start. Not sure where you can buy one right now, but I designed them for a company I worked for a number of years ago. Mark Empson

Softstarters do exist that can be used for small single phase motors. I know of at least two companies that manufacture them (since one is my own I won't mention either by name). What voltage is the motor to operate at? I am unaware of anyone who manufactures a softstarter for single phase 110-120V operation. 220V the minimum nominal system voltage for the softstaters of which I am aware.

thanks for your input! I found a Single phase soft starter by Baldor. Looks like it will do the trick. The voltage of the motor is 230V. Jon
