Out of curiousity, do most consultants provide electronic (pdf) or paper copies of reports to their clients?

I do almost 100% electronic for everything I write (papers for grad school, homework assignments, consulting reports, etc). However, a couple times when I have requested copies of public record documents from the city government, they have claimed not to have electronic copies and wanted to photocopy them.

Which is more common in the consulting world?

We do both, an electronic copy in an email, with a paper copy in the mail.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while you realize that they like it

I am probably in the 90 percent range with electronic, but maintain and often send paper copies to comply with state law.

Ron,

With the recent change to Florida Statues regarding wet seals, are you issuing maintaining an original signed and sealed copy of all drawings, letters, reports, etc. and transmitting copies or scans of these documents, or are you issuing original signed and sealed documents, only with a wet seal instead of an impression?

Hope this isn't a thread hijack, but it seems inline with the original post (just a little FL specific).

We always sent out an electronic copy as soon as the report was done. A signed and sealed copy with an ivoice would be sent out as soon as it came back from being proffesionaly bound.

Always remember, free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it!

Typically we send electronic followed by hard copies and wet/embossed seals as needed.

Daniel,
I haven't purchased my "wet seal" yet, but what I've done in that regard is to make an impression seal and imported that as a graphic into Adobe Acrobat for signature purposes.

I also have one with a signature overlay that I can paste directly into a document, then produce a PDF.

I put a sentence at the bottom to note the electronic copy:

"This is an electronic copy provided to expedite the receipt of the information contained herein. A signed and sealed original is maintained on file."

We only send PDF's of the plans. If the hydrology, retaining wall calcs, etc. are complicated or for a bigger project I will scan a wet stamped signed copy just to have if someone needs questions answered. For our work once that report is approved, most likely no one related to the project is going to want to see it again.

If the reports normally get questioned if they were submitted by the client for invoice payment, then I would always send over an extra wet stamped copy. Doesn't happen for us though.
