Hi.
I have a system on the plant that uses compressed air at 8bar and 40 deg C. The air hose is a nitrile rubber lined braided steel hose. The rubber lining suffered extensive circumferential cracking in only 30 months. Is it reasonable to expect such rapid degradation in such an environment? If so, what replacement rubber would you recommend?

In general if the nitrile is exposed to ozone (general outdoor atmospheres) then this will cause the Nitrile to degrade. Eventually if left long enough the Nitrile will turn to dust. I would suggest talking to a hose manufacturer such as Aeroquip or Gates and explainging your specific application - they should easily solve the problem for you.

Nitrile age hardens in hydrocarbon.
Elevating the temperature increses the rate of physical property loss.
Decreasing the temperature and reducing the API gravity or the Aromatic level of the oil will extend the hose life.
Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene rubber will last considerably longer but may be much more expensive.
