Hey,
I have a concrete columns supporting some sort of vertical shedding as shown in the snap shot, i am trying to design the connection between the column and the concrete wall but of course i am having a problem with the concrete checks.

my solution was to to embed the column to about 50 cm into the wall and do a base plate with hilti bolts and pour the concrete on top of that, will this eliminate the tension concrete checks for the hilti bolts??

and if doesn't help, i could really use some other suggestions.

Your moment would then be resisted by lateral stresses imposed on the column by the concrete, similar to a laterally loaded pile. That takes anchor tension out of the equation but leaves you needing to somehow evaluate the new mechanism which will entail its own concrete breakout check.

I would think that the embedded solution would be a bit messy with respect to constructability. I'd stick with the post installed anchors if they could be made to work. Would matters improve if the steps on the wall were shifted so that the columns are always mounted to the low side? That would mean longer columns but perhaps more favourable anchorage.

If you go with the embedded option, and there's space, consider casting in a grout pocket that get's filled as a second step rather than a wholesale to stage bout for the wall. That might help with constructability.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
