Flange Grounding and Baby Slots - Can Steel Suppliers Do These Things? 1

I wish to do two things:

1) Grind the flanges off of some channels locally while retaining the full web height and;

2) Create some small diameter, custom length slots.

Can anyone comment as to whether or not these are things that can be done easily / at all by a steel fabricator? Yes, I will ask this of a couple of steel fabricators as well.

Both could be done by the fabricator I work for. We’d call the first thing “stripping the flange”.

The custom slots would be easy if it was plate, we’d just burn it out on the plasma table. If it’s angle, we’d probably have to get a custom punch, but still doable.

Obviously going to pay a slight premium for both as neither would be standard beam work.

Thanks so much CANPRO. Slight premium is better than I'd anticipated.

Is this going to be done in place, in some crazy position, on site, or in the shop? I can’t really see what and where you are going to remove the channel flanges. A machine shop could certainly mill a few of those for you, leaving the full 3” of the web height, and providing a radius on the flg. end at the web about the same size as the rolled radius btwn. the flg and web, then out the rest of the width of the flg. A fab shop might band saw (or other saw) most of the flg. and web/flg. radius off, and then grind to clean up. Although with some of the newer cutting methods, they can do some pretty tricky things. RE: the slots, you can have a special punch and die made to do something like this. How bad to you want and need it, at what cost, that’s the question?

You’re very welcome. Don’t quote me on the “slight” part hahah

It'll be in the shop. See where the words "keep all" show up in my posted sketch. About 5" at the ends of rather a lot of channels.

I want it quite badly. At what cost will be a question for the folks footing the bill.

dhengr,

It's coming out of this thread of KootK's:
