I tried googling this but all I see are soil improvement engineeeing firms offering this service. I can't seem to find example analysis of this, like computing how many is required, how much it improves the soil bearing.

I've reviewed a couple analyses but typically the geotechnical contractor does the analysis in house. Honestly I prefer it that way since there are some assumptions regarding the column modulus, soil modulus in column zone, and soil constrained modulus that is required and I feel that its better to let someone seeing it day-in day-out to make those assumptions, especially since means and methods can dictate the values. The contractor will typically run a load test to make sure their assumptions were adequate. If I'm trying to run an engineer's estimate I'll get in contact with a geotechnical contractor to get a rough estimate.

Here are some references that discuss the design procedure.
