Hi Guys

I've been designing conveyors for a number of years now. Conveyor designs were initially not part of our scope of work, however to take on full plant designs we began to develop conveyors since many of the smaller companies did not meet many regulations with their designs. My conveyors meet various structural, mechanical and HSE regulations, and over the years I have managed to optimize the designs very well, bringing the mass significantly down.

Recently we were challenged by our sales department with regards to conveyors in the images attached. Both images present conveyors without any bracing on the trestles (columns). I haven't had a chance to look into a detailed design as yet, however I would like to know what your opinions are on the arrangement?

My biggest concern is the effective length of the trestles on longer conveyor designs (having a greater trestle length) and the sway effect, since there is no lateral bracing. The second image has very large CHS, which probably allows better resistance to sway effects, but even if it meets the required structural criteria those sections would be extremely expensive.

My initial idea is that the trestles could be filled with concrete.

I wouldn't make it rigid, as lateral stability is provided by the space truss. The stiffness of the column, with pinned ends, is only required to meet the vertical deflection criteria.

This looks like it might be a temporary batch plan or mill. If it is, maybe the designers took some liberties with the design.
