Apparently, this column is being used as a downspout and is clogged..

So who thinks that steel is galvanized? Honestly from what I've seen on projects like that, it would not be. I wouldn't allow it to be not galvanized, but I know there are engineer's around me that would.

Don't worry, it will rot out soon enough.
I worked in an old plant that had a saw roof with many internal drains, this was a common issue.

Uh oh.... An ever corroding cantilever column with a huge moment applied to the tip... What could go wrong!

I’ve never permitted a hollow section column for use as a downpipe. I just get them to run a pvc downpipe within the hollow section and have a stiffened opening at the base.

Will be interesting to see what, if any, effect freezing water inside has on the HSS cross section. The basketball goal in my driveway when I was a kid many years ago developed quite a bulge in the steel pole from water freezing inside. The wall of that pole was probably only 1/8" thick though.

That's a problem that will fix itself by transforming into an entirely different problem. Had one of those fall over from corrosion at the base which narrowly avoid guillotining some gas station customers with the roof, but it does take a while.

I like the stream coming out of the (empty) fire extinguisher box. Almost like it's supposed to be doing that.

But since we're on the topic of gas stations, here's a fun one I saw (just for a 30 ft tall sign, not a canopy):

Where is the downspout, which it should have at least one under the roof.

r13,
Its probably inside the column, hence the pissing. Usually they'll run the pipe through/inside the little island and out the side of the "island skirt", so that it blasts out all over your shoes.

Wow, that is scary!

Any concern with shrinkage and crack of the filling material?

Now that you've mention, it I've seen this kind of hovering baseplate at similar locations before too. Almost seems like whoever is installing these kind of signs doesn't think the bearing of the base plate on something solid matters.

jayrod12, my first thought was to report the post, but your correction was enough.:)
"Please let us know here why this post is inappropriate: Used the term 'cement' to refer to concrete! [sad]"

Maybe meant cement based grout.

No, fill it with cement. Just dump the powder down the column - when it rains it hydrates and cures when the sun shines. No need for all that pesky aggregate and batching.

I actually meant cement. We don't concrete oil wells, we cement them.
