I've taken a keen interest in geotechnical and non-geotechnical engineering 'historical interest' books. Anyone have any recommendations of books along similar lines? So far I'm into the following:
The Lives of the Engineers - Series of 4 (or maybe 5?) volumes written by Samuel Smiles in the 1860's - 70's - E-book versions are free on google books. Books provide a brief biography of the engineer and then a history of various works they undertook and how they undertook them (or repeatedly failed to undertake them until eventually succeeding, as the case may be)
From Theory to Practice in Soil Mechanics - Selections from the writings of Karl Terzhagi
The History of Geotechnical engineering up to 1700 - Jean Kerisel
