I'm looking at extending a jib crane support by 18" and plan to use an HSS 16"x0.375 tube with 1" plates welded top and bottom with holes to match existing bolt circle. Does anyone have a handi-dandi formula for checking the a tube with fixed ends for flexural stability, so no elastic buckling? Thanks in advance.

Hi dik

Any chance of a sketch to see exactly what you intend?

I would use something like that for combined loads on stacks or vertical vessels. References would be ASME STS-1 CL 4.4.1 & 4.4.2 or ASME VIII-2 Part 4.4.12. Otherwise, any pressure vessel design manual will have methods for design of skirt supports and combined loadings on vertical vessels.

Hi DIK,

For this case, LTB is not critical.. You are expected to check for bending , shear , torsion etc..

You may look API RECOMMENDED PRACTICE 2A-WSD (RP 2A-WSD) for the allowable stresses for the cylindrical members.

Roark's :
1 - ch 12 formulas for short columns + table 12.1

2 - ch 13 shells of revolution, pressure vessels + table 13.1

dik..

I believe that it would be reasonable for you to post your final calculations on this thread

Completion and distribution of your work would help others and enrich eng-tips in the long run

@hturkak: Based on your API reference, I found an equivalent ISO document in LRFD... thanks, again.
