Since I recently re-entered the world of metallurgy after almost 6 years away from it, I struggle when someone asks what a mystery metal is just by looking at microstructure.

Other than ASM's book of microstructures are there any references you would recommend? I know individual books for each type of material may help as well (eg a book devoted to stainless, a book devoted to aluminum alloys, etc).

What could you recommend. Today I was looking at a steel that seemed to contain primarily pearlite but also had what appears to be a decarb layer.

I guess I'm being hard on myself. It's only my 7th day of work back in the metallurgy realm. But between this and taking my PE I want to regain some of that hidden knowledge quickly.

Are there any good online resources for this?

I believe thast you mentioned in a previous thread that you are a member of ASM International. If you are still current, then you will have access to their online resources. If you visit their website check out the complete content of two of ASM's most highly valued publications:

Metals Handbook Desk Edition, 2nd Edition
Engineered Materials Handbook Desk Edition

Dave,

One reference we use is the "Atlas of Corrosion Resistant Alloy Microstructures" published by the Steel Founders Society of America. Go to for more details.

The atlas covers a range of stainless steels as well as Monel, Hastelloy, Inconel, and other nickel alloys
