I have a project constructed with structural steel that is existing and without original structural drawings (more than 50 years old), so we do not know too much about the mechanical properties of the steel used.

We propose to take field coupon of selected members (mainly W sections) and have a lab conduct mechanical testing (yield, tensile, elongation etc.).

Based upon ASTM A370 the dimension of the required coupons are rather large: 8" x 2"

Does anyone have experience with sampling field coupons that are smaller than the above, or know if another ASTM (or AISC) document permits smaller coupon sizes?
