What is the vert member? an HSS 6x6? Can you weld the C7 to the face of the HSS 6x6? I like stiffeners over support locations... makes things a lot more stable.

Not for pipe racks, but for cable trays, I've used an HSS 6x6 top member and an HSS 5x5 post... no top plate and no drain holes.

Have a look to PIP PNFS0001 Pipe Supports Details..

In general , the column is WF, UC .. and the stiffener is required in case of heavy point load.
Top plate may not be necessary..

I like to make these so that the top member can be bolted to the post. Maybe an HSS6x6 post with a W6x15 top member. Bolt the through bottom flange to the post cap plate. No stiffeners. No field welding. Less rollover tendency than a channel. Better moment connection to the post and greater overall capacity of the system.

Yes, the column is an HSS 6x6.

I found a detail showing a channel welded to the side of a WT section in the PIP PNFS0001 Pipe Supports Details (thank you HTURKAK for the suggestion).

If you weld the channel to the side of the HSS, what's a good way to go about sealing the top of the HSS with out a plate clashing with the channel?
 
You can have the cap plate welded to the HSS in a manner that it does not stand proud of the sides of the HSS.

HSS as column is not common to use as misc pipe support inside a plant. I heard mainly cuz of corrosion and harder to inspect.
 
Question: Based on the detail provided in original post, would it be beneficial to add a stiffener plate to both sides of the channel to resist possible torsion? Or would just one stiffener plate on side be sufficient?

Depends on the magnitude of the loading but generally no. Why not weld the channel to the face of the HSS per your previous detail and do away with the cost of a stiffener? Field constraint?

The original design has already been drawn up by the steel fabricator, so I would think only minor changes (something the fabricator is asking a question about) can be made to the design at this point.
