SolidWorks Copy And Pasting Multiple Entities While Maintaining Relationships

Hello,

I have used SolidWorks off and on for 3+years, but never made complex parts. I’m coming from CATIA (10+ years experience). Learning SolidWorks to help move on to other jobs and avoid the hard transition and hiccups.

CATIA allows you to copy and paste multiple entities (i.e. planes, lines, points, sketches, surfaces, etc.) into the design tree within the same part or into other parts while retaining the relations between the entities. You may have to relink some geometry depending on the configuration of the model parent-child relationship.

For instance, I could create a plane from two defined lines. Then I could create a sketch from that plane. From that sketch I could create an extruded surface.

In the part I am designing, I may use this structure (2lines>plane>sketch>surface) in multiple places in my part so I don’t want to be creating lines, planes, sketches, surface multiple times. I would like to just copy and paste the 2 lines I defined, the plane, sketch, and surface into the Design tree multiple times with their relationships linked. Then I’d like to slightly redefine the lines that define my plane and the sketch slightly in multiple locations. This way I save time on my design. I am basically reusing geometry I created so I don’t have to do it multiple times. This is something I commonly do in order to speed up my work especially when doing complex parts or defining an interface control model (ICM).

I haven’t been able to find a way for SolidWorks to do this. I have tried copy and pasting multiple entities of different types, but SolidWorks will only paste the Sketch and not the other entities. The sketch is placed on the front plane by default. Unlike CATIA that allows you to paste entities that may have a resultant error because the software was unable to find the parent relationship, SolidWorks doesn’t seem to allow this and let you relink the parent relationships after pasting them.

Could anybody let me know if SolidWorks is capable of copying and pasting like I’ve described or if there is a workaround for what I am trying to do.

Thanks.

You can copy and paste sketches, but you usually lose the relationships and the sketch relations. Planes and features to my knowledge cannot be copied and pasted like you are describing, but you might be able to make that into a Library feature and bring that into each of your part files. you will have to define such as placement etc... that is how I would look at doing it.
