I like the chase plane. I got to play with a few times. lol.

"Does the aircraft share anything in common with Overture?" ... yeah, it looks like very little. Maybe "all" XB-1 can do is verify the CFD modelling of the shocks, and so give "some" confidence in the Overture's modelling. The XB-1 is "bizarrely" long particularly compared to a reasonably conventional Overture.

Much flash, little bang ?

ok, got them confused. But then if the X59 has a quiet boom, what does the XB1 have ? a "standard" boom ? ok, a little quieter with some modern CFD developments.

Both the XB1 and the Overture are going to be noisy with the engine pods mounted below the wings. And yes, the shock from the conventional nose will theoretically be shockier, vs. the more spread out thump of the X-59. Theoretically*.

*I thought that the bow shock tends to coalesce with distance, due to heating behind the initial shock (warmer air = higher speed of sound = shocks behind the bow wave tend to catch up with bow wave at far field).

Boom's XB-1 test plane gets FAA green light for supersonic flight
By Jeff Spry published 18 hours ago
This new authorization allows the independently developed supersonic jet to attempt Mach 1 and beyond.

Although Mojave CA is routinely a hot, dry, one-color-landscape, VERY BORING place to live... the airfield has some amazing things happening as the civilian equivalent to Edwards AFB.
