Hi,
Can anyone shed some light on the following statement. I am trying to do a google search and not too sure what action/phenomenon to search for.
Most important also will be the effects of the flow of material through the piles from the fill behind the abutment towards the downslope in front of the abutments because of the uneven pressures on both sides of the piles. To take this effect into account one typically users 2x the pile diameter for the area to apply the force from the moving soil on the piles. Important for you to read up on expert literature on these effects. This will only occur if you have a relatively thick compressible layer of soil below the approach fill.
