Client is requesting ball valve for scrapper kicker line to be high performance.

can someone help me understand what makes a valve high performance and why is it needed for this application?

"High Performance" seems to be a vague term and doesn't mean much to me. Chemical service, temperature, pressure, actuation requirements (on/off only or modulating for flow control?) all are relevant factors. If this application is larger pipe diameter or higher pressure, then I'm pretty sure you'd start with trunnion ball valves and go from there on specification.

Trunnion mounted ball and API-6D

1503-44,
For my own edification, is "high performance", when used in the oil/gas industry in relation to valves, parlance for API-6D?

The term high performance is used for double offset butterfly valves to differentiate from zero offset resilient seated types. As far as I am aware 'high performance' has no real meaning for ball valves.

They might be talking about an API 6D with double piston effect seats? The seat configuration can be important for personnel safety for launcher/receivers.

I agree , this sounds OK like something taken out of context.

Only way out is to ask client what he means and ask for the relevant code it ie specified in. Expect silence....

In ball valves this is irrelevant.

Has the client got confused with "special class" valves to B16.34?

Add double block & Bleed with lube fittings.

It's a pig launcher. What else could it mean.

Valve on scraper kicker line is in throttling operation for pigging ops. Could this client mean a metal seated ball valve to reduce consequences from erosion on an otherwise soft seated ball valve ?

Soft seated valves are usually more resistant to erosion.

It's more likely to be full open to move the pig through the main valve and past the tee, then fully closed again for a relatively long time. Corrosion is more likely than erosion, but the launcher would probably be drained immediately after use, thereby neither should be a problem.

OP,
My definition of a high performance valve is the following:
A valve that will provide the highest level of safety and availability under extreme operating conditions. As a reliable shut off valve, it should be able to resist aggressive media (abrasion, and corrosion), extreme pressure and temperature and/ or frequent actuating operation.
Metal seated ball valves with hard facing is considered to give long life and lower maintenance.

The key words their being "my definition"....

Buy the most expensive and say it's because its "high performance "....
