DEFRs will save the grid. They are baked into every Net Zero plan. What, you may ask, is a DEFR? It is a Dispatchable Emissions-Free Resource. Essentially it is some mythical beast that you can switch on and off, and it delivers emission free electricity.

Green hydrogen is one such tech, but it looks like electricity from green hydrogen will come in at about 6 times the cost of electricity generated from natural gas (although to be fair gas peakers are twice as expensive to run compared with baseload NG). generating cost is onlty part of your bill, so that doesn't translate directly across to the power bill.

Please prevent your politicians from looking stupid by inventing a DEFR.

DEFR's need to be powered with unobtainium.

Francis Melton and friends take a big picture look at New York New York's energy plan for net zero. Basically NY has legislated for all electric heating for large buildings, EVs, no fossil fuel power stations, in 6-11 years. The 'plan' is entirely dependent on DEFRs. In a separate article he wonders when the populace will discover the truth about the emperor's new clothes. I suspect 2027.

California is pushing distributed generation. They say it has to be carbon neutral relative to the grid but provide no definition of what that means. They have targeted my industry specifically. Luckily, they misworded their law and made us mostly exempt.

You can't "prevent politicians from looking stupid".

DEFRs = unicorns, another buzzword to go along with "Net Zero", or "NZ50" ?

Once the cost of these dreams hits the tax paying public they say "WTF ?"

But then NY could build nukes; start now and you might have a small modular system up and running in 10 years (probably more like 20 ... it'll take 10 years until you can start site work), and then similar systems could start u every 10 years or so.

"Hoffen wir mal, dass alles gut geht !"
General Paulus, Nov 1942, outside Stalingrad after the launch of Operation Uranus.

It takes about 8 years to build a modern nuke the rest is red tape. When the Brits built the first commercial nuke it took a year to design and 3 years to build, and ran for almost half a century.
