We have some general notes and a detail regarding conduit running horizontally through concrete slabs. One of those notes is to provide rebar perpendicular to pipe embedments. This is in accordance with ACI 318-19 section 20.6.4 which says to provide at least 0.002 x area of concrete normal to the "piping". My question is - Is this required for PT slabs? Specifically for small conduit with adequate spacing (clusters are a different story). While conduit in the slab always causes some heartache, I'm inclined to say that this reinforcement might not actually be required. A couple reasons: 1.) I don't see this requirement in the PTI manual. 2.) The older versions of ACI specifically refer to conduit and piping. They only mention "piping" when requiring the 0.002 x area. 3.) If this were simply a void in the concrete (think something like a hollow core slab) I wouldn't be concerned with it, so why would I need to provide the 0.002*b*t rebar.
