Hello -

Since GeoPaveTraffic was so helpful in the curb ramp thread - I figured I'd throw another one at you.

Can a handicapped ramp be curved? This is not a curb ramp, but a ramp for a building. I understand that the beginning and end of the ramp need to be "square" for the wheelchair to approach it. The site in question has a building with a curved wall (Radius 640') and we would like the ramp to follow the wall.

The ramp will be about 120' long, with 30' long segments and 5' wide landings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Kate

Try 20' maximum ramp lengths or ramp segments. Worst case scenario - show how a minimum width straight ramp (44"?) would fit in your curved segments. I have not laid it out, but 5 foot width may be adequate. You may have to make your ramp wider or shorten the segments.

Don't forget to check your local code, there will be a requirement for a flat "rest" area every 20' or so along the ramp. I agree with gibfrog, a curved ramp should be fine if the minimum width is maintained along the curve.

I agree with the others, a curved ramp should not be a problem in and of itself as long as the intent of the ADA is met.
