We have a requirement for a simple coupling guard for an offshore pump - one of the requirements specifies that the material must be "non-sparking" so that in the event of any kind of contact between the shaft and the guard the possibility of ignition of any explosive atmosphere is reduced.
There is some debate internally concerning the best material - aluminium alloy of brass?
Any contributions to the debate would be appreciated.

Probably best to go with a good brass/bronze alloy. Cu-Ni or Al. Bronze should do well. I'd probably use 90-10 Cu Ni.

If you're working on an oil and gas project, they usually don't allow you to use aluminium anyway. They say it burns too easily.
