I am currenly writing a site investigation assigment and I was wondering wether anybody had any recommendations for the preparation of footing bases in sandy soils. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the sands are relatively clean (less than 15% fines), I would recommend that you compact the upper 12 inches of bearing soils to 95% ASTM D1557 (Modified Proctor) density. Perform density tests to confirm acceptable compaction. Dewater prior to compacting the soil, if necessary. If the soils possess more than about 15% fines (but less than 25 to 30%), use a Standard Proctor compaction criteria (ASTM D698) instead.
