Hello,

I've been asked to research monolithic insulators for use on natural gas pipelines ranging from 3" to 16" and just wondering if any one out there has had any experience (good or bad) with them. We'll be using them to seperate line sections so we can conduct studies on the individual line section.

Thanks

Well experience with the MIJ during fabrication of risers and installation, not during actual use. The welding of MIJ to the riser on one side and the topsides piping on the other is as per ANSI/ASME B 31.8 and B31.3 respectively, the MIJ normally being the spec break. In case of thickness of the MIJ being >19mm on the B31.3 mm side, it would necessitate PWHT. Now MIJ manufacturers usually come up with a lot of write ups and restrictions to be employed during the welding of the MIJ to the pipe on either side. But the PWHT unfortunately is forgotten. So you end up with a girth weld on the topsides very close to the MIJ which would need PWHt and if the length of pup piece used on the MIJ on the B31.3 side is not properly designed would cause a lot of problems as you don't want the MIJ to see temperatures in excess of 50-70 Degrees C (usually recommended by the manufacturer of the MIJ).

Thanks and regards

If it moves, train it...if it doesn't move, calibrate it...if it isn't written down, it never happened!
