Varies widely - probably from about $45 to $200 per hour, depending on the consultant's credentials, the nature of the work, supply & demand, etc. Some consultants will discount for large jobs, some will not.

Check out your proposed consultants. We had two who produced inferior designs. Both were from software houses. Get your consultation from reputable manufacturers. I used a manufacturer who solved a hard problem in a short time, and he agreed to call the session at noon. We saved money that way.

Consultants should be manufacturing-oriented not tied to a software concern. This should give you pause in the application of computer solutions to problems.

Let's not slam all consultants tied to software. The reputation of UTS as gear consultants is held in high esteem by it's clients and UTS is happy to conect you with consulting customers.

I have the highest regard for UTS and PowerGear, but there are others out there trying to undermine UTS. Ask manufacturers what they are using. You may learn that there are unknown software worth considering.

Was the inferior design because the consultants didnt know what they were doing (ie. they were programmers, not engineers)?

Or was there some other reason?

Programmers, not engineers. Engineers worry about all the details and working conditions. Load deflection is one detail sorely overlooked.
