    Pole Barn beam sizing

Thank you for the responses. The columns would be 10' tall. I will run the calcs but they will probably end up being 6x6's or 8x8's.

    Pole Barn beam sizing

I was asked to design a pole barn and I have always passed on these type of projects because my calcs don't seem to match what the contractor says they want to do and what has worked for them in the past. The contractor would like to install 4x6 columns 8' o.c. He wants to use a 2x12 beam on...

    mold question

Supposedly the water got up to the wood sill plate and studs and was coming out of the windows because the house was vacant and a neighbor saw the water coming out. Sounds like it was flooded for a month or so. I was told the incoming water line broke and filled the basement. I have advised...

Adding 3/4" plywood to triple lvl beam

would you put the plywood on the end or in between members?

Adding 3/4" plywood to triple lvl beam

I am working on a basement renovation plan where the owner would like to remove a column and install an lvl beam in place of the existing four ply 2x10. There are joist hangers on each side of the four ply 2x10 beam. The problem is a triple lvl is not as wide as a four ply 2x10. It is 3/4"...

    mold question

I was asked to inspect the structural components of a basement that flooded several years ago. The house has sat vacant for the last few years and now someone's trying to restore it. While I was there I noticed along the bottom of the foundation wall there was a black line and the concrete had...

3,000 lb new point load on existing slab

A client wants to remove some walls and install lvl beams to open their floor plan up. The point load on a column on the 1st floor would support a 3,821 lb load. This will have to be transferred down to a column in the basement which will sit on an existing concrete slab. Assumed 4" slab but...

new footing on top of existing slab/footing

See the attached sketch. My client is removing the existing foundation wall and pouring a new wall. The contractor just proposed keeping the existing footing and slab and installing some compacted stone to match the top of slab height and then pouring a new footing on top of that. Do you see...

new lvl floor joists on existing wood stud wall...concrete strip footing needed?

The span is 22' and with 2x12's there will be too much deflection and they will have a bouncy floor.

new lvl floor joists on existing wood stud wall...concrete strip footing needed?

I am working on a project where the owner is looking to add a 2nd story to their existing one story house. The house was built in 2001 but the owner does not have the original plans. 22' long lvl floor joists will be installed (16" o.c.) and they will bear on an existing 2x4 wood stud wall that...

    Concrete block.foundation cracks

I don't think they plan on finishing the basement. They're looking to take the roof off and add a second story to the house. Their finance company said they need an engineer to provide a letter stating what repairs need to be done if any. I don't have enough experience with this type of issue...

    Concrete block.foundation cracks

Do these cracks look concerning or are they just superficial? https://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=9ed6d9cf-2b59-4a52-b136-05cd16f7cdc5&file=Screenshot_20230815-150926.png

3/4" pine boards instead of plywood or osb sheathing

I was contacted by an individual who is constructing a barn with a gambrel style roof. He is using pre-engineering gambrel roof trusses. He asked if he could use 3/4" pine boards (8" wide) for the roof sheathing. He would install them tight together(not spaced apart like strapping). The boards...

Barn slab with skid steer travelling on it

For a 40'x80' slab that will have a skid steer driving on it multiple times per day would you recommend going with a 6" slab instead of a 4" slab? Would you use rebar instead of 6x6 woven wire mesh? The skid steer with the weight it is carrying would be around 15,000 lbs. Thank you for the help.

    Angled wood stud capacities

I may not come up with a plan for them due to my minimal experience with angled supports but I would like to learn how to do it. Thought I would check on here to see if someone could provide some guidance.
