I think I now know why I am experiencing the problem. sketchup is a surface modeller and therefore there is no solid body to convert. My next quetsion would be does anyone know of a way of converting surfaces into true 3D?

Well from details on the web site it certainly seems to have the facilities to convert to 3D.
