I have a question regarding the use of Mud Mat to meet the design excavation level.
I am working on a deep foundation that is laying on slightly to none weathered bedrock. The excavation involved blasting which resulted in some areas that were over excavated approximately 5 feet below the...
I would like to know the value because I'm not sure which safety factor is applied. I dont know if I'll need to apply another safety factor on top of the one already applied.
I need to do some aluminum beam design and had some questions on Aluminum Design Manual(ADM) Part VI Table 2. This table shows the allowable stress but is shown as F/Ω. It does not specify what the omega value is... Does anybody what the over strength factor that is used?
Can anybody point me to the right direction on how to design foundations for bracing through gable wires? Are there any codes or guides I should follow?
I have only accounted for uplift force created by the tension force through the wires but I'm sure there is more to account for.
thank you to everyone who replied.
I decided to go with retired 13 and STrctPono's advice of using cables and turnbuckles. I plan to have a minimum of 2 braces.
For retired 13, I see that in your sketch you drew a weld knife plate as a connector. Is that connection possible with a circular pipe...
it is a very interesting method but I'm afraid that I'll need to increase the existing foundation. I was hoping that all the lateral force will be transferred through the pile foundation by placing the column all the way down the pile. But now having some of the reaction shifted to the base of...
So the existing column is hollow and it goes down the complete depth of the pile foundation. I would have placed a steel plate on top of both columns and weld it shut. But now I believe retired13's advice will work better. I'm going to see how the design will work if I place a smaller column and...
Thanks to everyone with the new replies!
Agent666 the new column will go down all the way into the deep pile footing so there will be no baseplate for the new column. There will be a lateral wind force being applied to the column and the axial load is very minimal. After doing some calcs, both...
yes, the footing is embedded about 5' into the ground and I have designed it as an unrestrained condition.
@retired13 I was planning on adding a pad type footing that is 18" deep around the existing foundation and connect it with rebars and epoxy.
I am in the process of designing a steel pipe column that will require inserting a new smaller column inside of an existing column to increase the allowable strength. The smaller column will have an outside diameter 0.2" smaller than the larger column's inner diameter.
If I were to treat the...
I was actually thinking about this route. I was planning on adding additional concrete at the base of the foundation to create a fixed connection. The existing foundation would be enough to support the sign with a fixed condition.
I shall install 2 rods on both sides of the sign. The existing column is strong enough to handle the wind load coming to the side of the sign face. Do you still recommend going with a pipe brace? It seems as though those products are used for shoring and will be a temporary solution. I also dont...
I do not have any pictures right now but there is a 5'x5' sign on top of the pole 11' from the ground level. I do wish to weld another steel column as a brace at the side of the column but I can not find any information on welding for a pipe column...
Thank you for your reply. My initial idea was to just install the anchor rods as the brace for the 4" pipe. The horizontal load at the top is less than 2 kips.
