    3x framing on shearwall

Hello, One question When is 3x framing required for an unblocked shearwall besides of course at the adjoining panel edges? Thanks

HSS Column embedded on 1' deep concrete grade beam

hello everyone, one question how can I prove that steel column embedded on 1' deep concrete will act a fixed support or something closed to a fixed support? Thanks for your help

    LAG SCREWS

The Lag screws lateral strength on chapter 11 of the NDS from a side plate to a main member say to be based on a penetration of 8D. Does anyone knows how the strength increases if a penetration depth of 16D is used instead. Thanks

    Reduced Beam Section

I have been reading about reduced beam section, and it says that it helps on the reduction of the need of continuity plates as well as doubler plates, but I dont understand the reason for this since having a reduced beam section increases the moment at the face of the column in comparison to...

    Continuity and doubler plates

So what you are saying is that shear and moment connections should be designed by plastic moment and everything else just for the loading happening at the frame? Thanks

    Continuity and doubler plates

Hello Everyone: Are the continuity plates and doubler plate should be checked by the couple being produced by the Plastic Moment at the beam, or the moment at the face of the column due to the load (Shear and moment diagram). I am confused, I thought I was the plastic moment, but I saw someone...

    Sliding Resistance

Well, the purpose of the grade beam is to make the steel columns fixed and tie them together. They receive the moment at the end of the column and create more weight to prevent overturning. I dont know if grade beam is the correct term used, but thats what we call them.

    Sliding Resistance

Basically This is what I am designing a soft story retrofit on a open wall line using a moment frame. I analyze the moment frame just due to seismic forces. So the sliding force is the base shear. If I ignore lateral pressure, then the sliding resistance will just be based on weight of...

    Sliding Resistance

I am designing a grade beam foundation, and wanted to check its sliding resistance. I know that I have to considered friction and lateral earth pressure, but I am not sure to what surfaces of the grade beam I need to apply this lateral earth pressure to. Thanks

    stair Design

Hello everyone, I am currently designing a stair with just one stringer HSS shape, with steel plates as tread. Someone told me that when you design a tread, you need to apply the 100 psf and a concentrated load of 300 pounds. I am not sure where to apply the 300 lbs. If someone please could help...

    Grade Beam

I am designing a moment frame which has a grade beam joining the support and below two concrete pads at the support. How can I find the sliding resistance of the foundation. Thanks

    PLASTICITY AT THE COLUMN

    Thanks for your input

    Sliding Resistance

I was told that I am supposed to find the passive resistance for all the surfaces of the grade beam, add them up to the weight of the beam times the tan(angle of friction)

    PLASTICITY AT THE COLUMN

When designing a moment frame, Do we assume that a plastic hing will be created at the end of the column where the base plate is located? In other words, Should i design the base plate and foundation based on a plastic moment?

    SEISMIC RETROFIT- SOFT STORY

Hello guys, I am working on a soft story seismic retrofit of two story building apartment with a tuck under parking on the first level. The solution that I am using is steel moment frame at the carport. Should I design the shear, moment connections and the foundation based on the assumption of...

    Base Plate Design

I understand that a point load with a eccentricity is equal to a moment. But on the picture, The point load with the eccentricity is being equal to a moment and also an axial load at the moment's location. Shouldnt It just be equal to the moment? Thanks for your help.

    Sliding Resistance

Hello guys. I am working on seismic retrofit of a soft story and using a steel moment frame as the solution. I am designing the foundation using a grade beam and pad footing at the support. I am trying to find the sliding resistance of the foundation and compare it to the base shear. I have...

    Base Plate Design

Hello, My name is Daniel. I am designing a base plate connected to a pad foundation with a grade beam on top of the pad footing. I have a axial load and moment transfering to the foundation. I found a page that says that when moments act at a foundation, it is normal to replace them by a...
