    Insurance

My clients generally dictate to me what limits I need. I had a $1M claim / $2M aggregate policy for 2 years without issue. Now clients want me to increase to $2M claim & aggregate. Inflation maybe?

    Insurance

I use BiBerk for my general and professional policies for the last few years. It is generally ok. Certificates are easy to generate online. They added some online customer service tools that alleviate the need to wait on the phone. I think their premiums are tied to expected revenue. I had a...

    1970's Era 7.5" Deep Deck

No concrete, just 7.5" deep corrugated steel decking. Looks like a standard 1.5" B deck profile except very deep. Or looks like a PZ sheet pile. Roofing materials directly on top are comprised of 1" rigid insulation and PVC membrane.

    1970's Era 7.5" Deep Deck

I am working on a project where I am being asked to analyze the existing roof of a school building for introduction of new snow drifting loads. The building is a single story CMU bearing structure without beams. It is simply sheets of 7.5" steel deck spanning 32' to 34' between bearing walls. My...

    PE Structural CBT April 2024

I found the "16-hour Structural Engineering (SE) Practice Exam for Buildings" by Joseph S. Schuster helpful and the problems were close in difficulty to the actual exam. Granted, I took the exam on paper. If you're not a bridge guy, I found the David Connor bridge practice exams helpful.

Hidden & neat-looking splice connections for SSHS

I've used the Shuriken splice system from Atlas Tube before. https://www.atlastube.com/products/shuriken/

    SE Exam October 2023

I passed building lateral on the third attempt. I had passed building gravity on the first attempt last year. I am extremely relieved, to say the least (as is my wife). I used the AEI course for studying preparation and I found it extremely helpful.

    Printing vector (not raster) graphics

I agree, what I've done is use Bluebeam "reduce file size" tool to reduce my report size and it works pretty well.

Delegated Design of Steel Joist to Joist Girder Connection

If the joist isn't acting as a chord or a collector, then isn't this just the standard weld detail in the joist catalog (1/8" x 2" both sides) checked against your uplift? I've rarely had to deviate from that.

    ASCE7-16 or ASCE7-10

Reaffirming, I work in Ohio, we're on 7-10 still.

    E&O Insurance

I use BiBerk for my E&O and General Liability. I did the research myself instead of a broker. I found many companies won't insure structural engineers. I wanted to use ASCE but I never got a response back after multiple emails and phone calls. I found that BiBerk had a broader range of...

    Helical Pile Contractor Resouces

I have trouble getting responses as well. In the absence of any info, I use 60k axial/uplift and 6k shear capacity for helical anchors.

    Unbalanced Rafter Dead Load

I have been asked to provide an opinion on a residential roof project where the insurance company only wants to replace half the roof singles. The home is a 4:12 gable with 2x8 rafters at 16" O.C right at the current IRC maximum span. There are ceiling joists acting as rafter ties and no upper...

    RISA 3D V 18 Specific Complaints

I may be the minority here, but I actually love the V18 interface much more than previous versions. Granted I am a younger engineer than most in the office. It seems more in line with how Revit works and maneuvers. This is really useful to me because I am essentially working between the two...
