    Estimating Units - Professional Organizations

Hi, Does anyone know of an organization that stores and sells estimating construction man-hour data for piping, electrical, structural, etc.? I know of the John S. Page manual for piping and the NECA manual for electrical... But are there any organizations that keep updated records and support...

    Isometrics and Cut-sheets

So a cut-sheet is a spool drawing? I am getting the impression that people use the wrong terminology... Are the cut-sheets what the fabricator provides to the client to indicate the as-built condition of the spool (with heat numbers, weld and RT callouts)?

    Pipe Schedules and Wall Thicknesses

Please, what is the purpose of STD, XS, and XXS pipe? Does this just give the designer a larger range of wall thicknesses for a given pipe size (at pipe sizes 10" and above for STD and XS, and for pipe sizes 6" and below for XXS)? There is no material difference or anything? Also, I have seen...

    Isometrics and Cut-sheets

Hi, What is the purpose of a cut-sheet? Isn't all the information for fabrication on the actual ISO? Further, aren't you only supposed to build off of IFC ISOs? Is the sole purpose of the cut-sheet to show where the FWs are, and thus call out spool numbers? Thanks

    Electric Motor Bearing Heaters

itsmoked, Are you saying there are heaters in the motor journals then too? It seems to make complete sense to me... I'm talking in the industrial context with fairly big induction motors.

    Electric Motor Bearing Heaters

Sorry waross, one more point: during the summer months when the temperature is above 0C the condensation forms in the liquid form (obviously) and not a solid frost ice. This, and the fact that hotter temperatures speed the chemical reaction of corrosion, implies that it is of more concern to...

    A/C Induction Motor Run-in

API 686 has this paragraph: "5.4.1.2.3 Axial alignment shall be done after the motor magnetic center is marked during field or factory run-in. The motor shaft shall be located on magnetic center. If the motor cannot be run for magnetic center due to an end fan, the motor manufacturer must...

    Baseplate Leveling

clay87, why is it a big deal for soleplates specifically?

    "Centrifical"??

Is this how centrifugal is pronounced?? I have been saying it cen-tri-fu-gal... But I have heard a lot of older guys say "centrifical", which isn't REALLY condusive to the spelling...

    Electric Motor Bearing Heaters

waross, This was a very helpful post, thank you. I just want to confirm what you are saying because I don't think most people I have spoke with in the preservation departments at my work really understand the concept and idea behind motor heaters. In essence, where I work the heaters are only...

    Studs vs. Bolts

fegenbush, What is a "red wrench" and what is your point about bolts vs studs in that context?
  12. jdogg05

    Baseplate Leveling

Yes! That is a good point.

    Studs vs. Bolts

    moltenmetal could you kindly elaborate?

    Baseplate & Soleplate Design

LittleInch, Sometimes when I re-read things with a cold eye I see them differently (or maybe I should say correctly). I understand what you are saying about the baseplate being sufficiently strong on it's own now. Also, the manufacturer will have to perform all the FAT tests on a test bench at...

    Head Studs vs. Bolts

Not when you are first hand tightening them in, no. But when you torque the nut down it will also turn the stud tight into the block.

    Studs vs. Bolts

Yes, to be honest, those fallacious articles were actually the reason I made this post!

    Baseplate Leveling

In regards to bingopin's point, I see what you are saying (btw, my reference was to API 686 in regards to this leveling business). I guess it wouldn't necessarily be that bad for the operation of a particular pump/driver (as long as the alignment, soft foot, pipe strain, etc. were adequate) if...

    Studs vs. Bolts

Hmm. I actually have yet to see any bolts (cap screws) and nuts on pipe flanges anywhere I have been. It is almost exclusively studs with a through hole and a nut on each side.

    Baseplate Leveling

I guess another important point to make would be that you only get one chance to level the baseplate. After it is grouted, that's it. It would help elminating all future shimming, alignmnet, thermal growth distortion issues later on. Also, in the case that the pump and/or driver need to be...

    Studs vs. Bolts

CoryPad and tbuelna, thanks for your input. I was unaware of hydraulic tensioning. It sounds like an absolutely fantastic way to pre-tension fasteners. I mean, I have seen where wheel stud lug nuts are tightened/loosened/tightened/loosened for 2-3 repetitions (using a brand new stud and nut) and...
